A Nigerian woman identified as Adanwimo Okafor has made history after becoming the first black woman to be General Counsel for the American Board of Surgery.

Okafor, who was named the General Counsel of the American Board Of Surgery excitedly took to her LinkedIn handle to share the good news to friends and colleagues.

Sharing the good news on her LinkedIn page, Okafor said, “I’m the first person of colour and first black woman to hold this position in the organization’s 80 plus year history!

“By stepping into the GC role, I join a small but elite group of black GCs who’re leading their company’s legal departments and paving the way for others to follow in their footsteps.

“I still can’t believe it — me, GC? Honestly, this moment feels so surreal because I never thought I would be here.

“My journey to become a lawyer was full of ups and downs. There were times I felt like this is my calling and my purpose. Other times, I felt like I didn’t belong, that I wasn’t supposed to be here at all. I wanted to quit and walk away…but I didn’t.

“I’m the product of years of relentless prayers, years of unconditional love, years of nurturing, years of support, years of favor, years of forgiveness, years of sacrifice, years of persistence, years of failure, years of mistakes, years of fulfillment, years of grit and God’s daily grace, and years of overcoming some of life’s biggest and most challenging moments.

“I first want to thank God publicly for what he’s done for me privately all these years. That I’m here at this very moment is evidence of his love, his mercy, and his grace — all of which I don’t deserve but he continues to bless me, and I’m forever grateful for his unfailing word.

“I also want to thank my village – my family, friends, colleagues, sponsors, mentors and mentees – who kept encouraging me, supporting me, and reminding me that I am worthy, that I am smart, that I am more than capable, and that I do belong here.

“I’m so excited and ready to make an impact in this new chapter! I know the best is yet to come!”

The American Board of Surgery is the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists in the US.

In addition to being the General Counsel, Okafor also serves as the inaugural chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer in the organization.

Congratulations to her!
