Afton Smith was born on the 3rd of December 1967, in Northport, New York, United States. Born to Miriam Smith, Smith spent most of her early life in New York. Smith’s interest in acting came around when she was 12 years of age and the former actress took acting classes during her early years.

“I started when I was quite young at 12 years old, I just loved Broadway, and I loved theaters, and I loved movies and I just said this is what I wanted to do.”

Professional Career:

Smith made her debut appearance in the crime drama movie, Less Than Zero in 1987. Smith was forced into hiatus, following a short appearance in the TV movie Once Again, and had no roles in four years. In 1991, Smith was seen in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes and played the role of Leona Threadgoode, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Smith finally got her big break in 1994, when she appeared in the movie, Reality Bites. In 1995, she was cast in A Reason to Believe, and she followed it up with an appearance in George of the Jungle in 1997. George of the Jungle marked her last appearance and Smith left the industry for good.

Life as a writer:

Following her exit from Hollywood, Smith wrote and published the book Hollywood Picks the Classics: A Guide for the Beginner and the Aficionado. The book was published on the 3rd of November, 2004. In 2011, Smith paired up with her mother and Margo Smithwick to write the book, Point to Happy: For Children on the Autism Spectrum, for her autistic son, Griffin. Her latest book, The Tiger: Class of January 1922, was released on the 14th of August, 2018. 

Personal Life:

Afton Smith was previously married to Brendan Fraser. The pair first met when Fraser shifted to Los Angeles. The pair met at a barbecue part hosted by their mutual friend, Winona Ryder in July 1993. The pair dated for two years before tying the knot in September 1998. The pair tied the knot at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Their first child, Griffin Arthur Fraser was born on 7 September 2002, followed by Holden Fletcher Fraser on 16 August 2004, and Leland Francis Fraser on May 2, 2006.

A year after the birth of their third child, the pair filed for divorce in 2007. The divorce was finalized after 2-years in 2009. The court decided total payment of $900000 to Afton, in addition to $50,000 of monthly alimony, and $300000 annually in child support. In 2013, Fraser pleaded with the court to reduce child support and backed up his reasons by showing a lack of movies and projects on hand. The payments were ultimately reduced.
