Rights group urges Nigerians to reject ethnic sentiment on #EndSARS protests

A human rights group, Coalition For Revolution (CORE), has said that #EndSARS protests have nothing to do with ethnic or religious sentiments, as some elites in the country are desperately trying to paint it.

Co-conveners of the group, Baba Aye and Gbenga Komolafe, while addressing the media in Lagos, yesterday, said Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic background and those who stood together during the protests to end brutality of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), should be careful not to fall for such evil agenda of the elite.

According to CORE, “A dangerous development in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests is the fanning of ethnic sentiments. During the protests, young workers, professionals, traders, artisans and all other strata of the oppressed stood together as one. Members of the elite class, the rich and powerful in and out of the government were primarily responsible for stoking the dangerous fires of ethnic division.”

CORE admonished Nigerians that it is only in unity and struggle they could find strength, saying, “The exploited and oppressed should reject and combat all ideologies like ethnicism, which can only divide us if allowed to grow.”

The group also tasked Nigerians to be vigilant as the Judicial Panels of Enquiry set up by various governors, begin to undertake their mandate.

It noted that several similar panels of enquiry set up on human rights abuse in the past did not produce results.
