Raul Jimenez helped Wolves get their 2020/21 Premier League campaign off to a winning start by starring in their 2-0 victory at Sheffield United on Monday night.
The Mexican picked up where he left off by netting a stunning volley inside the opening three minutes, reminding everyone that he remains among the top-flight’s very best marksmen.
Romain Saiss doubled the visitors’ lead just three minutes later, all-but ending the game before it even started, and the rest of the match was all about the quality of Jimenez up front.
While Wolves manager Nuno-Espirito Santo will be delighted with his star man’s performance, it may also cause a slight concern in the back of his mind.
With the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the new season, the transfer window remains open until October 5.
That gives managers a rare opportunity to assess their squad during the opening weeks of the campaign, and perhaps even keep an eye on others.
Rumours surrounding Manchester United’s interest in Jimenez have died down in recent weeks, but they may well be reignited after his display on Monday night.
The 29-year-old was unplayable at times, delivering an all-round display which any striker in Europe would’ve been proud of, against one of last season’s most resolute defences.
Given the Red Devils’ failed pursuit of Jadon Sancho, and questions surrounding Anthony Martial’s ability as a centre-forward, Jimenez is exactly what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs this summer.
United had the third best defence in the Premier League last season, their midfield has been boosted by Bruno Fernandes and the arrival of Donny van de Beek this summer, and they have two electric wingers.
Add Jimenez to their ranks and United will be title contenders. If Solskjaer didn’t know that already, he will after tonight.
